Upper Caravanserai
This magnificent monument was built by local craftsmen and became famous throughout the South Caucasus for its design, structure, size, and convenience for trade. The total area of the caravanserai is 6,000 square meters. Its height is 14 meters on the side facing the street, and 8 meters on the inner side. The building consists of around 300 rooms and a basement. In terms of size and capacity, it is the largest caravanserai recorded in the territory of Azerbaijan. The main façades of both caravanserais face the river. The architects skillfully utilized the rocky terrain of the area and a slope reaching several meters. The caravanserais also included many spaces and pools for tying pack animals and horses.
Lower Caravanserai
The Lower Caravanserai, built on the lower side of the Upper Caravanserai, has a total area of 8,000 square meters. It includes 242 rooms and a basement. The caravanserai is surrounded on all four sides by large entrance gates. When the gates are closed, the caravanserai turns into an impregnable fortress. The Lower Caravanserai has features characteristic of Eastern caravanserais. Unfortunately, this historical architectural monument fell into disrepair due to long-term neglect and lack of use. In January 2010, restoration and repair work began at the Lower Caravanserai. The 5,197-square-meter roof was fully restored and covered with tiles. Four double-leaf gates, 170 windows, and 128 doors were renewed, 30 arches were constructed, retaining walls were built, and doors were opened from the rooms into the basements. Restoration and repair work is ongoing.
