Bash Zayzid is a village located within the Bash Zayzid village administrative territorial unit of the Shaki District of the Republic of Azerbaijan. It lies on the banks of the Zayzid River, on the southern foothills of the Greater Caucasus range. It has also been recorded under the variant name Baş Zayzid. The toponym means “Upper Zayzid village.” Interestingly, the Albanian monument known as the Cruciform Church, attributed to Orta Zayzid, is sometimes mistakenly presented as being located in Bash Zayzid. However, as previously noted, the inscription on the monument clearly states that the temple belongs to Orta Zayzid, and geographically, it falls within the territory of that village. About 15–20 meters downhill from the monument are the remains of an ancient wall that likely once marked the boundary of the temple’s premises. According to Dr. Ellada Bakirova, PhD in History, a researcher of Albanian heritage at the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), these walls encompass a fairly large area and extend downhill toward the lower parts of the village. Unfortunately, aside from limited exploratory work, no proper archaeological research has been conducted in this direction so far.
Moreover, there is an ancient cemetery in the vicinity, which is believed to be an old Albanian burial site.
The condition of these monuments is unsatisfactory. The temple is under threat of collapse, and the cemetery area lacks any protective barriers. Its surroundings have turned into a dumping ground, and the site urgently requires comprehensive archaeological investigation..
