Albanian Trail: Trekking from Sheki to Oghuz along Albanian Churches and Caravan Routes

Embark on an unforgettable journey nestled in the heart of the mountains, where every step allows you to feel the magnificence of nature! This adventure will immerse you in the magic of the Greater Caucasus, the spirit of ancient villages, and the freedom of untamed wilderness. Set out on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure along the Albanian Trail in Azerbaijan, following this route:
Sheki city — Kish village — Sheki city — Verezat village — Bash Zayzid village — Orta Zayzid village — Bideyiz village — Bash Kungut village — Bash Keldek village — Oraban village — Mukhas village — Jalut village — Oghuz city. This scenic path encompasses the region’s historic caravan routes and the ancient monuments located along them. It offers a wonderful opportunity to witness traces of our nation's Christian past and to experience the area's rich cultural and historical diversity. As you cross the Caucasus Mountains, take in breathtaking views of valleys, lakes, and dense forests brimming with wildlife. Discover ancient caravan paths, fortresses, churches, mosques, watchtowers, and rugged roads. Get acquainted with the vibrant local culture, delicious cuisine, and enduring traditions. As you reach the villages scattered across the region, each step will unveil something new and exciting that will fill you with wonder and admiration.
Day 1: Sheki City — Kish Village
We set off by car to the ancient village of Kish. Here, we visit the Kish Temple, dating back to the 1st–5th centuries AD, which has preserved deep traces of history. Then we stroll through the village’s old neighborhoods, feel the mysterious atmosphere of the area, and visit the newly built Kish Mosque.
From Kish village, we head towards the magnificent “Galarsan-Gorarsan” Fortress. After crossing the Kish River, we reach this legendary fortress and witness the stunning views from the top. After exploring the fortress, we return to the city of Sheki.
After lunch, we begin discovering the historical and cultural riches of Sheki. Our journey starts at the Sheki Fortress, followed by a visit to the stunning Khan’s Palace, which is distinguished by its delicate “shebeke” stained-glass craftsmanship.
We then visit the Circular Albanian Temple and the ancient caravanserais of Sheki, fully immersing ourselves in the unique ambiance of this historic city.

Day 2: Sheki — Verezat — Orta Zayzid — Bash Kungut — Oraban Village
After breakfast, we head to the historical Ganjali neighborhood of Sheki city. From there, we begin our hike along a mountainous path towards the village of Verezat. As we ascend through the upper part of the neighborhood, we enjoy a panoramic view of Sheki and delight in the beauty of nature.
After approximately two hours of trekking, we arrive in Verezat village. Following a short break here, we continue our hike toward the village of Orta Zayzid. Upon reaching the village, we visit the Khachvari Zayzid Church and the historic Zayzid Hermitage. These ancient structures bear deep traces of Azerbaijan’s history and add further intrigue to our journey.
From Orta Zayzid, we continue toward the village of Bash Kungut. After visiting the historical Albanian church located there, we proceed to our final destination — the village of Oraban. In Oraban, we visit the ancient Albanian cemetery, and at the end of the day, we rest in a guesthouse in Oraban village to relax and recover from our mountain hike.

Day 3: Oraban Village — Mukhas — Jalut Village — Oghuz City
We continue our journey from the village of Oraban toward the city of Oghuz. Passing through the enchanting Oraban Forest, we advance deep into nature. After crossing the Dashagli River, we reach the Mukhas Tower, which bears witness to ancient history. From there, we proceed and enter the village of Mukhas.
From Mukhas village, we follow a mountain path to the ancient village of Jalut. Passing through the village, we continue toward the mysterious Albanian temple located on higher ground. Here, we feel the traces of history and visit this unique monument. After that, we head toward the city of Oghuz. By exploring the beauty of Oghuz and discovering the Albanian temple, we complete our journey with unforgettable memories.
